Here is the articulated tug-and-barge combination of the Joyce L. Van Enkevort and the Great Lakes Trader arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the afternoon of December 27, 2022. She was arriving empty and was scheduled to load taconite pellets at the National dock in West Duluth. The taconite was to be delivered to Cleveland. On her way in, it was evident that the barge Great Lakes Trader was wearing a good amount of the Great Lakes on her hull in the form of ice. Unfortunately, we didn't get a salute from her on the way in, but this was explained by a crew member who briefly left the tall standing pilot house and shouted to the north pier crowd, "Our horn is frozen!" This can be heard at 1:25 in the video if you listen closely (or wear headphones).
Another 'chilling' video from you. Judging by her covering of ice, it's not surprising that her horn was frozen. I'm sure that the crew had other frozen things to deal with before making her ready for loading. How close were you to being frozen while there catching this arrival? The Great Lakes Trader...Superior gave her an icy slap but she wears it proudly...shes a survivor..and it didnt stop the Trader...push on she said and push on she does...love to hear the hum of those two Caterpillar diesel engines as she pushes through the Canal..and very nice of the crew to speak out about the lack of a salute...its awesome to me watching this tug and
Joyce L. VanEnkevort and Co. making like Michipicoten for the CN dock. After waiting a spell, I totally understand. Get 'er done! The VanEnkevort's "higher than thou" pilot house resembles a lighthouse in style. Something different to go with those loud Cat engines.
