COMMENTS: - -Proud to have NAS JAX in my neighborhood, as well as Mayport Naval Station. As a musician, I played for many a sailor, NCO and officer, at all three of the Naval bases in the Jacksonville area (including the former Cecil Field) and was happy to do so.
This brings back some very fond memories ! Started in San Diego, boot camp (you know that was a long time ago) and 'A' school. Made way to "rotten" Groton, on to Mare Island and then Norfolk. Been to J'ville and Mayport along with Kings Bay...the good old days which I'd never trade in...been on northern runs (blue-nose)and places that are probably still classified...miss my old shipmates...some are gone and some I've lost contact with but I am thankful for the privilege and honor of serving my country in the best military force in the history of the world !
Jacksonville, FL is a big Navy town. It was even more so when I lived there because Cecil Field Naval Air Station was still operational at that point. Just north of Jacksonville, on the Georgia side of the Florida/Georgia border, is Kings Bay Naval Submarine base as well. So right in that area you had, when I lived there, NAS Jacksonville, Mayport Naval Base, NAS Cecil Field, and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base.
