Wild potato species originating in present-day Peru can be found in America from Canada to southern Chile. [3] The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated independently in more than one place by the indigenous peoples of America, [4] but later genetic testing of a wide variety of cultivars and wild species followed a single origin of the potatoes. From a species in the Solanum brevicaule complex, potatoes were domesticated in present-day southern Peru and the extreme northwest of Bolivia, about 7,000--10,000 years ago. [5] [6] [7] Also native to the region of South America, where the Andes species is cultivated, a close relative of the potato is cultivated.
Potatoes were introduced to Europe from America by the Spaniards in the second half of the 16th century. Today it is essential food in many parts of the world and an integral part of the world food supply. As of 2014, it was the fourth largest food crop in the world, after potatoes, corn (maize), wheat and rice. [8]
After a thousand years of selective farming, there are now more than 5,000 different varieties of potatoes. [6] More than 99% of potatoes currently grown worldwide are derived from varieties that originated in the plains of south-central Chile.
