Just think, that majestic tree was 240 years old when the Declaration of Independence was signed. How many more historical events did this giant of the forest witness? It was a seedling around the year 1500. Standing tall and strong for five centuries, withstanding weather, fire, war and disasters, just to be destroyed in the name of wood, paper and toothpicks. What a shame.
Trees can live anywhere from less than 100 years to more than a few thousand years depending on the species. However, one species in particular outlives them all. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva) has been deemed the oldest tree in existence, reaching an age of over 5,000 years old. From google
At 500 years old, this tree has seen and survived alot of history. As the human population continues to explode like a gangrenous, cancerous tumor, more and more of these majestic monuments of nature will die. Sad doesn't do it justice. I will give credit to the California fire fighters who wrapped some of these giant trees in fire proof wrapping to keep the fires from burning them this year. Thank you for caring.
